The Grand Mount Wutai traverse, also known as the “big pilgrimage circuit,” takes place in the core area of Mount Wutai in Shanxi. The mountain consists of East, West, South, North, and Central Peak, and is one of China’s four great Buddhist mountains as well as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
This itinerary completes the five-peak traverse over three hiking days, beginning at Hongmenyan and linking Dongtai Wanghai Temple, Beitai Lingying Temple, Zhongtai Yanjiao Temple, Xitai Falei Temple, and Nantai Puji Temple. The route moves between open alpine meadows, broad summit ridges, and temple culture for a mountain journey that is both physically demanding and deeply atmospheric.

Schedule

Hike about 15 km over 6–7 hours. The night is usually arranged in temple lodging or simple accommodation near the North Peak. The team gathers near Hongmenyan, hikes to Dongtai Wanghai Temple to adapt to altitude and terrain, then continues via the Fayun Temple direction to the North Peak area.
Day 2: North Peak – Central Peak – West Peak – Shiziwo
Hike about 18 km over 7–8 hours. The route passes via the Zaoyuchi area to Zhongtai Yanjiao Temple, then continues to Xitai Falei Temple before descending toward Shiziwo for the night.

Accommodation & Supplies
- Accommodation is mostly simple temple lodging or modest local stays, so participants should be comfortable with shared rooms and basic facilities.
- Meals depend on the actual overnight points and may include vegetarian temple meals, simple hot food, or trail meals carried by the team.
- A light pack is recommended. A 30–40 L backpack with warm layers, rain gear, a headlamp, personal medication, and trail food should be kept on hand.
- Temple lodging follows strict local rules: no meat, no alcohol, no waste, and respectful quiet behavior.
Safety & Support
- Wear proper mountain hiking shoes and use two trekking poles if possible to reduce strain on long ascents and descents.
- Shell layers, fleece or light down, thermal base layers, a windproof hat, gloves, and neck protection are all essential.
- The North Peak rises above 3,000 m. Any strong altitude reaction should be reported immediately so the plan can be adjusted or a descent can begin.
- Professional outdoor leaders manage pace and build supply and emergency planning around temples, road junctions, and retreat points.
